Meaning
What is the Tao?
The Tao (道) means “the Way”: the nameless source and natural pattern of everything. It cannot be captured in words, yet it can be lived, the way water finds its level without effort.
The Tao Te Ching is a short book of verse attributed to the sage Laozi, written some 2,500 years ago. Its first thirty-seven chapters speak of the Tao itself; the remaining forty-four speak of Te (德), the quiet power of living in harmony with it. Its advice is simple and strange: yield rather than force, empty yourself so you can be filled, and lead by letting things be.
